How to Pick the Perfect Wedding Photographer.
Wedding Planning Pro Tip: Do your homework to ensure you find the right photographer to capture your day! It's important to remember that while we capture your precious memories, we are also artists and want to put our unique perspective to your finished Images. Take time to read reviews on multiple platforms and review their work thoroughly!
Whoever you ultimately decide to work with should want to understand your vision for your photos! Serena and Merwin communicated with us so we understood what their desire was for the end result. They wanted something different and dramatic. Something that wasn't the type of photos like every other in love couple had (running happy through a field holding hands) so we put on our creative thinking caps and worked together to create some stellar art for their pre wedding photo shoot! They wanted to feel like a movie poster for this portrait session, so we aimed to deliver exactly that!
The 3 most important things when considering who you want to capture your wedding are style, personality and price point. We have expounded on these points to help you identify and hopefully select one of the most important creative wedding professionals you’ll hire for this day; your wedding photographer!
First on the list is definitely STYLE
You have to love the style of the photographer you choose because what we do is ART. If you aren't sure what kind of style you like, spend some time on Pinterest. The popular terms you might come across are light and airy, classic, timeless, true to color, dark and moody, cinematic, warm, candid, journalistic and of course vintage. Try typing in these specific terms in your google search bar and seeing what populates for that style. Take some time looking through these different looks until you can identify the way you envision your day being captured!
You will want to invest in a photographer who will shoot similar to the style you are most in love with. The way I often explain it to couples is simple, “You don’t want to commission an artist to paint a Mona Lisa styled portrait if they pain like Picasso.” The end result might be more amusing than beautiful and probably a lot less like what you originally had in mind.
With UnityREEL you will see two primary styles in our portfolio : Timeless / Light and Airy & Cinematic / Dark and Moody. We love to play with light and shadows so our style can be both bright and dark which is not something you will see with every photographer! The main thing you will notice in our work is that regardless of how light or dark our imagery is, we love to preserve the integrity of the whites in the image.
Our capturing style is a blend of and emphasis on candid capture with a balance of intentionally creative portraits. We consider ourselves to be your creative director where we will always prioritize the authentic moments (we don’t like staging and faking photos that are not a true reflection of your memories). We will always aim to capture what is genuine and actually happening but we use our years of expertise in the Austin wedding industry to pre select the best places for those organic moments to take place! We will take a minute to position the bride in the best lighting and in a clean environment for mom to zip the back of the dress or pin the veil rather than just capture it right where they decide to put it on with pasty cups and bras in the background. Our desire is that your photos are the perfect distraction free reflection of your authentic moments.
Next up is PERSONALITY
Do you like the personality of the professional you are considering? If you haven't met with them yet then we strongly encourage you to do so! Your photographer will spend the most time with you on your special day capturing all of your most important moments. You will want someone who can give gentle but helpful guidance when necessary and still knows how to have fun while they work! I promise that a moody rude photographer is NOT what you want. Get to know them and ask them lots of questions to get to know them better.
Our desire is to get to know our couples and their love story so we can do our best to curate some incredible art to match! We are fun-loving and genuinely care about give our couples the best possible experience with us. We are servants at heart and aim to serve our couples with the heart of Christ.
Last but not least on our list is PRICE POINT:
Much of wedding planning happens with a certain budget in mind. Be conscious of the budget you have set for your creative professional but also be realistic as far as what your expectations are for that set budget. Usually the highest price points are well seasoned in what they do and have invested a ton of time perfecting their art and money to upgrade to state of the art equipment to ensure the best quality content.
Honestly, if you find a photographer who checks all of the boxes style, personality, and price point you may have found the photography unicorn and you may consider booking them quickly. 😂
If one of these three is not what you were looking for then determine which of these three factors you would be willing to compromise on to get someone solid in the other two areas.
Sofi and Eric were incredibly open with us about exactly what they were wanting. They loved the vintage vibe with tons of candid interactions to document their love story.
Find someone who will take the time and really invest themselves in the vision you have for your engagement , bridal portraits and wedding day.
