Does your wedding photographer know how to use flash?

There is a wave of photographers taking on the heavy influx after the last two years of covid and you might be surprised how many of them don’t actually understand lighting and how or when to use flash.

When hiring a creative professional to cover your wedding day you hope that they understand how to capture you at your best in any kind of lighting; they are the professional after all. Don’t make this risky assumption that “they know their stuff” but rather ASK if your photographer knows how to capture a dimly lit dance floor, a bridal suite that has limited available light, or family photos after the sun goes down. Ask them to see full wedding galleries that show the different lighting conditions you might experience on your big day from start to finish. If they can’t share a gallery with you that shows how to use lighting during the reception then this is a BIG red flag.

Lighting is KEY! The proper lighting can literally make or break your wedding day coverage.

If it turns out that your venue has black ceilings or walls, or even brown wooden walls be aware that these factors can absolutely affect your wedding photos. This is why it’s important for your professional photographer to know how to work around these factors. Please know that you don’t have to miss a single moment of your meticulously planned wedding reception because your photographer doesn’t know how to get the best images of your and your guests. The proper lighting can make all the difference in capturing the energy on the dance floor.

What about those shots using creative lighting? If your creative professional is able to use lighting to make those really cool creative shots this is a major bonus! Likely a lot of time, energy, and practice has gone into them perfecting the technical side of photography so that they can really focus on capturing your wedding day in a creative and compelling way.

We believe that you should have beautiful photos of your special day regardless of what your venue lighting is like. We have 8 years of photography experience with the last 5 really focusing on how and when to use lighting.
